Take a special inside look at the day to day tasks of a Chief Fire Fighter with John Morgan from Cal Fire!

and where I wanted to go where I wanted to go but as time goes on you know you kind of find yourself learning about new things learning about different things and I found out that after having many jobs and in many different sort of career past I found out that fire was my my passion to Works prepared apartment now that's not to say that I didn't have other ideas before that so you know being a kid in grade school in intermediate and I wanted to be a driver I went through a stage where I wanted to be an underground Miner and mine for gold right who doesn't want to be a gold miner then in high school I wanted to be a rockstar and I had real long hair and and you know play musical instrument I still play music instruments for church but but that past and and I got into construction and and things like that and then I realized how is there was a fire near my house and I needed to grab a shovel and go help protect my own property that that intrigued me and someone came along one of the firefighters play said hey you know you really kind what the shoveling your hands so to speak because I was I was using a shovel to put out the fire near my house and he said hey you should try and get on with the fire department when I was young enough that the time and and that type of you know I didn't have all this gray hair at the time so you know moving forward I started volunteering and what kind of get into that timeline here in a minute but I'll go share my screen in and start my presentation this is really my attempt to give you a path to becoming the fire chief so what I do currently is I run five of the Statewide programs for Cal Fire Cal Fire is California's fire department and we we control or have dress fiction over almost a third of California so it's quite a large fire department if you can imagine we are the second largest Fire Department in the United States and we are though the largest all-risk Fire Department in the world so it's pretty interesting it's a it's a really great opportunity and great place to work we have a lot of different opportunities more get into that here in just a moment this video real quickly what kind of go over many of those opportunities that we have in Cal Fire but you can also experience many of these opportunities in other fire departments as well so you have City fire department Municipal Fire Department's fire districts and things like that in smaller jurisdictions so here's a sample of what Cal Fire does hopefully you can hear sound correct I love working for Cal Fire my name is Lisa Lisa Penny decided when I was going to school for business that I did not want to do that anymore that's why I started looking into firefighting and I realized that's exactly what I want to do everyday is different you might be eating dinner and then all the sudden you're on your way to a medical Aid or a traffic accident ticket to go out help people save people lives don't like sitting at a desk I get to have an adventure every day is different I have to go do things that other people only dream about doing Annette doing my best he's working here and get really close to people they're my family now it's unlike any other friendships that are built in my life it's adventure all the time I get to work with my friends by vehicle fire the station fire structure fires get to go to traffic accidents medical aides you can work on a helicopter I just love all the opportunities that you had I love working for Cal Fire I wouldn't want to work for any other department yeah so just a little plug for Cal Fire there but it's it's like I said opportunities like that are available many different fire departments I have had the wonderful opportunity of doing literally everything you saw in that video helicopter boats River and and Swift rescue over the side rope repelling all of it Wildland firefighting everything you saw they're climbing up the big ladders on the on the ladder trucks and everything throughout my career and it has been extremely rewarding for me not only on a you know on a financial basis right it's always nice to get paid to do your job but also in importantly on a personal level I feel like I've helped people like I've made a difference like and I continue to make that difference so really exciting career I definitely think that everyone should you know follow their dreams and and really do what your heart tells you to do and if that's firefighting I'll have a q r code at the end of this presentation for you to follow to fill out application when it's time but me I became a volunteer firefighter as I mentioned before I was you know out there working on that fire near my house and and firefighters said hey you should try this so I became a volunteer volunteer firefighters are the backbone of the United States Fire Department Industry so haid firefighters really only make up about 40% of the firefighters within the United States and the rest are all volunteers so over half of our our firefighters throughout our volunteer and what that means is they truly give their time to the community there they're literally giving back without expecting anything in return so it's a really great way to start out the train you they give you all your Basics and as you can see I I got my basic firefighter training there my emt-b which is emergency medical technician in. can be used for ambulance I also worked on in the ambulance in my local community so getting this training through the fire department can help you in multiple professions also started simply me to college I wanted to get my college done really quickly so my smallest semester was the 2021 unit load I had to get special permission from the dean to do that but the largest I completed and I kept the average through the whole thing but I had a $27 semester once and knocked out my my college relatively quickly kind of twice as fast as most so it can be done don't don't ever get discouraged. tell you it can be done and it can be done quickly and effectively in 2001 I was fortunate enough to become a firefighter 1 like you saw that woman in the video I started in that position with Kelsey are in the Madera Mariposa Merced area and began working as a wildland firefighter you saw some of those images they are in the video where we're out in the forest we're fighting Wildland Fire throughout California all the way from the northern to the southern border and are are eastern and western California borders and a Torero opportunities we actually cross state lines and go to surrounding states so it's pretty interesting position and it really affords you the opportunity to to expand your horizons I do see a hand raised did want to remind folks we're going to go over questions and answers later so will we will be getting to that in 2004 I promoted to an engineer or what's called a fire apparatus engineer and that's basically the driver of the fire truck so you get to drive everybody around you get to direct them at priorities on the incident and you to provide for their safety really I did that throughout multiple areas with in the San Joaquin Valley Madera City Los Banos. Palos up in the mountains in Hossa and you again you get to you if you've ever seen a fire truck and there's all these knobs and levers and gauges that's what the engineer deals with they do a lot of math the I have to figure out how much pressure to pump the water so that they know it will get to the end of the fire hose where the firefighters needed so desperately while they're fighting fire you have to understand you know all of the ins and outs of fire pumps and how they work so that you can make sure those firefighters remain safe I'm 2009 I promoted to fire captain in that role I was able to really become a I would say that was probably my favorite role in the fire department not that I don't like my job now but as a fire captain you get to become more of a team lead rather than an individual whose you know on the team so you kind of look what does you're the coach now and you go everywhere the team goes but you're really you're directing the team on how to perform so that they can effectively complete the task I became a rescue company officer which means I was jumping off of the side of the building's on a rope and going down and rescuing people off of Cliff sides and things like that also be helicopter crew member and if you work for Cal Fire you get to become a pilot for helicopters when you work on them because if the pilot has a medical emergency someone still has to fly there helicopter so they taught us as a fire captains how to fly the helicopters so I was really interesting and very exciting part of my career to be on that helicopter flying throughout California putting out fires rescuing people on long line ropes that hang down from the the helicopter also got to participate in water rescue in and released train people in all of these disciplines so at this point I was able to become a almost a teacher a trainer or all of these disciplines also became a member of a large incident command team so if you've ever noticed to be extremely large wildfires throughout California they aren't just managed to buy a bunch of people coming out the woodwork to go fight the fire there's actually a a incident command team that helps everyone know what their job should be what their priorities be where they'll be working for the day what are some of the risks and Hazards of Bill encounter for the day and how to go about being effective for their for their work shift and that incident command team has to put together everything from ordering food because we have thousands of firefighters on the on the fire how do we feed them ordering restrooms because we're all here that's right figuring out where to let them sleep how how do we sleep these people are they going to be on the ground are they going to be at least in a park where they can can a sleep on soft grass is it possible to get them hotels so that they can sleep in a comfortable bed every few days so the incident command team you can you can tell really has to think about a lot more than just the fire and then one of the last things I did as a fire captain we was become a fire marshal so a fire marshall is the position in the fire department that goes over Development and Construction action plan so if you've ever wondered look at all these houses that are built to look at these buildings that are constructed throughout your area who tells them how to do that safely next can you go into a store or you know like a big a big store maybe it's a box store of Walmart or or a grocery store or something like that look up and see if you see sprinklers their little and then sprinklers hanging down those are required by the fire marshal and we calculate how many are needed for the building based on the fire load that would be expected in there so all kinds of things if you've ever seen fire extinguishers look around next time you go to to a classroom and see how How are schools set up they have fire extinguishers and sometimes Sprinklers and they have exit routes in exit signs and things like that when you go see a movie watch when the movie is playing look at the floor and see that there are lights on the for those are eliminated so that you know which way to go in the event of a fire and of course all those exit signs that you see that's a beacon for you to follow when there's nothing going wrong so pay attention to that stuff that's all fire marshal stuff in 2016 and became a battalion she's up in Mariposa County for their County fire department I was there fire marshal as well as an initial attack Incident Commander so that means like when a fire first begins they send the initial incident attack Commander so do to start the incident to gauge big this fire might get and Order resources appropriately to take care of and mitigate that fire the long-term I also became the training program coordinator and government liaison which means I dealt with County government city government state government officials to make sure that we were all on the same page and working together to make that Community a safe place and continue to build plans for that Community to to ensure safety and all of you who are in these towns there was a fire marshal in that town who is doing the exact same thing in 21 in 2021 I became an assistant chief overseeing four of our Statewide programs defensible space which is a it's taking care of the Landscaping in the plants around homes and buildings also ran home hardening which is changing out windows and roofs to to better harden a home from being impacted by a wildfire as it approached I also take care of the burn permit program throughout the state and the Damage Assessment program when a fire goes through and is over we have to assess all the damage and get that information out places like insurance companies federal agencies who help pay for Disaster Cleanup and that type of stuff and now I'm a Staff key so I picked up and in addition to those four Statewide programs I picked up another Statewide program which is our utility Wildfire mitigation program that means we go to all the power companies the people who provide us our electricity make sure that their Hazard mitigation plans are up-to-date and following rules and regulations that they need to follow we have inspectors and all kinds of people who deal with that stuff and overall I supervised about 200 people throughout all of my five programs I'm also a legislative consultant so when new laws and regulations are becoming are going through the process and Sacramento I have an opportunity to talk to legislators to add my my two cents if you will might take on how this legislation will affect to the fire department and the citizens of California and and participate in that and in addition to all that I have to pay for it in some way so I run about a two million-dollar budget from my position with that I think we kind of ran about a half an hour so far or so and we can open up to questions and comments I will say that if you go on our website fire.ca.gov join Cal Fire you'll find not only firefighter jobs but also many other like Forestry jobs people who go out and help replant for us and grow in our nurseries new tree because after a fire goes through we have to replenish these Forest two to make them beautiful again right and help improve our environment and keep those ecosystems everything's so I think your question is who's responsible for paying for fire suppression cost it really depends on the predictions so if it's a lightning let's say it's a naturally caused fire lightning caused to the fire then the government picks up that cost if an individual starts a fire they do have the potential of of having to pay back some of that cost I can tell you that fires can cost millions and millions of. to put out so it's extremely difficult for an individual to pay for that but there are repercussions for for starting fires and even if he's are the fire correctly if you allow the fire let's say you were in a rural area and you were able to burn a burn pile out in the yard or a campfire or a cooking fire if your neck and allow that fire to escape then there's liability there to there's there's the potential to have to pay or even go to jail Alright good question who's next we have Daniel hello I mean firefighter sorry but I have a question so when do does where is your job life risk absolutely firefighters put their lives on the line every time they go into an emergency situation so think about just the beginning of the call driving out of the fire station they're putting themselves in a vehicle and that is a risk right you can get in a vehicle accident and things like that and then getting to the fire and being in it in that situation there are times where we've had individuals fall through roofs of structure fires and even be hit by trees out in the forest so yes it's extremely important to be extremely careful as a firefighter and really pay attention to those safety's time so that you can keep yourself out of trouble all right question who's next I just want to can you do me a favor and type your question in the chat your audio broke just going to ask what's the most beneficial part of all your job and what's the worst part about your job really great question you know the Ben is it to my job is that feeling of being able to help being able to make a difference and have an impact on the community I think that's something that really it if meaning in a in a real and substantial way in that you know you kind of feel like you have purpose right someone depends on you of course as I mentioned a little while ago it's always nice to have a financial benefit to back that up so you know you get you get a paycheck that's another benefit and then you know the the the down side to it one of the big downsides is you see people let's let's say you go to the alarm goes off at the fire station and it says we need you to respond heart attack victim we need you to respond to a baby choking these are real situations where it's actually life threatening to them and you see the individuals at their most vulnerable time if there's never a time in their life where they feel more vulnerable or more scared than they do at that moment so the real downside to you know just knowing and understanding that you see those situations every single day so it's important to maintain self care and maintain those close relationships with family and friends and sometimes professional helpers like psychiatrist to help you work through a lot of those issues on the downsides thank you so much for your service you're welcome did you get your question in the chats or do you want to immaculate I guess I'll just say okay there you go now does it feel to become a fire chief yeah right it's kind of a mixed because you're excited to promote you're excited to to go on to bigger and the you know quote on quote better things but at the same time you pick up a lot more responsibility when I was a fire captain I dealt with my crew of five people and now my crew is over 200 people add to you know I have to look out for them I have to make sure they're there being trained correctly and being trained to safely and responding to incidents and inspection isn't going through all of this stuff in a safe Manor us Oaks while it is exciting and you know it's just one of those feelings of great accomplishment you also have that no responsibility for more and more as you promote a great question I see I see Serena's question and it's a it's one of those issues that you really are her question yeah I will it's so the question is what happens if you aren't able to save the people in a fire and that's the real that's that huge downside to emergency service work you hope you'll go through your entire career and never lose anyone write the goal is MSY we train so much is to save everyone who we get called out for right so I'll put it a quick story in here one of my really great friends he was called to a fire him and his partner arrived and there was a mother outside of this Burning house screaming help help help my child is still in their bedroom she couldn't get in because it was too hot so those firefighters when and through the front door busted through literally broke through the bedroom wall from the living room got inside that bedroom and took the kid out through the window and saved his life it was miraculous it was this these other heroic moments like people are always thinking about thank God I've never had to actually drag someone in that situation out through a window or something like that I've been fortunate enough to be able to get there in time to put out the fire before they were injured or killed but in those situations there comes a time for a lot of self share a lot of making sure that you're dealing with those issues in a healthy and productive way and and making sure that you're being honest with yourself about how situations impact you really great questions thanks who's next we have a brother thank you for being patient guys I'm going in order of how it's showing up go ahead and Bar you're there how long did it take to become a firefighter good good so when I became a volunteer firefighter there was a 6-week training course for that and then I went to a fire academy which was about it was a full semester so it's about three or three and a half months or so and that's how long it took me to get the initial basic training and then I got experience through my volunteer organization Jackfruit couple of years and then I got on with Cal Fire as a paid firefighter but technically I was a full-fledged volunteer firefighter performing all of the same work as a paid firefighter what's in about 6 months we have Francis Sanders how much money do you make per year find that out on sacbee.com question it's actually listed right there on that website when you go to the the website it's in the chat it's fire.ca.gov forward slash join Dash Cal Fire all of our positions are listed right there with their pay scale so you'll see that firefighter pay scale when I started as a firefighter I was getting about $3.75 an hour it's a lot more today and today's firefighter world they're making closer to $6,000 a month all right we have Cham so I wanted to ask if you were able to either make different career decisions or like you mentioned I believe in 2009 you were a fire captain then you said that was one of your favorite physician positions in Cal Fire and I wanted to know like if you are able to do anything different in your career like what would it be in like what year and what influence you to become a firefighter yeah really great great question it's so I'll start at the end what influenced me to become a firefighter and that was really just this opportunity I fell into I was a farmer time and so I had extra time on my hands or 4 I had time that I could have just right I wasn't that a nine-to-five job at a store or something so I could Volunteer Fire firefighter and I was inspired to do that by something a firefighter told me which was why you did a good job out here he said it in a funny way hey you really shine with a shovel in your hands but it it made me think about that line of work and how I could maybe help my community so that was the inspiration the the what would I change component let's see it's it's been such a great career and I'm about two and a half years away from retirement so I'm almost to the end right it's it's one of those things where I really don't know and I would change anything with the exception of like I'm happy with my progression through my career and the the the positions I've held but I think I could go to help to other firefighters know and understand how important it is to take care of yourself and your family and provide self care super kind of this blind Allegiance or a you know to the fire department when you're looking at your life and your choosing priorities you really have to think about okay is this what's best for the Department for myself for my family and really weigh those options I'll have to say I think I could have done a better job in expressing the the importance of making good prioritization decisions between work and family life and I could have been a rockstar so who wouldn't want to go down that road we have one last question that's Mister just Sia what do you guys do when you're basic yeah training so we do a lot of fun things like working with ropes and you know pulling a fire hose into a building and putting out a fire when they build them in these training centers so there's an actual fire that you actually go get to work with you get to take the jaws of life tear apart cars and rip the roofs and doors off and it really experienced all those things that you hear about on the news and care about in stories you get to do that so those are some of the things that you do it at basic training some of the other things you do is you sit down at a desk and you watch Powerpoints and you learn about all these skills the science behind fire how is it made I need what is it how does it react with different fuels in different weather conditions and then the medical side of thing and of the job and how to deal with people in their absolute worst moment of their life so these are the things that you learn in that basic Academy and you continue to learn those we kind of say your a your  too end of the fire service your entire career and that goes for most jobs I would say probably all jobs you can learn every single day in whatever you're doing all right you two last questions are going to close up questions after this if you guys think yeah I'll wrap up with that one if you don't mind me asking what was either the most miraculous moment or like one of the most tragic moments of like an incident or fire something always amazed at I'm always amazed at how powerful this job can be and what I mean by that is when you're watching a fire consumed on a complete Mountainside in just a few minutes you realize the extreme power that you're dealing with and trying to mitigate and control its it's beyond what you think is humanly possible and yet we're able to do it every single day so those are those miraculous moments where you realize wow this extremely large powerful fire was just consuming all of the fuel off Mountain after Mountain after mountain and the work we did stop it it's a feeling of accomplishment also a feeling of protection and duty to the citizens that you're serving so that's the miraculous side of things we've touched on a little bit of the downside of this job but you do you go from that extreme excitement to extreme sadness sometimes because you're dealing with people and places when they are experiencing their worst moments I believe Samuel L e r Chief Morgan why do you destroy cars why do we destroy cars the reason for that so there's a tool called the job life in many will let me see it this way in different circumstances during a vehicle accident a person might be stuck inside the car right there open the doors so they can't get out through the windows and so there are times where we would have to bring in these tools that are hydraulic and or sometimes battery off braided and actually cut the roof off the car so we can get the person out of the car sometimes they're they're you know the car might be upside down so we have to lift the car up and get to them that way and literally cut or tear the door off of the car to get in there and get to the to the occupants so those are some of the reasons that you have to destroy a car I've lifted up trains with our tools as well and then to wrap up mrs. King asked can I talk about a fire Badgers schedule so in certain fire department they have what's called a one on and one off schedule so you work one whole day you're awake for 24 hours and then you go home and you're at home for 24 hours that's the one-on-one off shift many fire departments have gone to a 56 hour work week so there at the fire station for a couple of days plus a few hours and still there they are living at the fire station and you saw in that video that they have meals together they do have an opportunity to sleep between calls and things like that but there's a lot of training there's a lot of cleaning and household work and cooking and also running emergency calls so you can sleep in between other fire departments like when I started Cal Fire's schedule was 96 hours a week so you were there for four days straight all the way through you didn't go home don't go home at night you don't go home for lunch that you're at the fire station for four straight days today we have negotiated through our Union that it's a 3-day work week so you're there for 72 hours and still though you're there you don't go home you don't you don't get to leave you are at the fire station working that entire time and you do get to grab apps and sleep when you can so it's not like you're up that entire time but oftentimes you are working you know your full 8 hours a day plus some the the the kind of wind down in the evening have dinner workout you workout every single day lifting weights running all of that type of stuff and it's a fun competition when you're fire station because you're with a bunch of other firefighters who want to do as good or oftentimes they want to do better than you so it's it's always this fun competition to see you know who can run faster who can lift more weight who can do something you know extraordinary like spike the ball the ball during a volleyball game really hard because of course you got to play volleyball calisthenic workout so there's a lot of fun that goes into some of that schedule as well I do see one last hand raised DJ go ahead Artistry jurisdiction extend Cal Fire's jurisdiction is Statewide with the exception of Incorporated cities like the City of Fresno has their own fire apartment the city of San Francisco has their own fire department but we're all around them you'll see the Cal Fire Patch on all of the fire stations and fire engines in the county areas and then the other exception is federal land so let's talk about like Yosemite or Sequoia National Forest or something like that that's run by federal firefighters the federal fire department play with the creek fire right you might talk to the little couple of years ago and was up kind of ice shaver kind of you in our in our area and chief Morgan was involved in not as well back there was some through the federal firefighters doing B and Cal Fire doing another part right yes yes so we went into what's called a unified command with the federal fire department and we basically helped each other put the fire out its started on Federal Land and started to expand because of weather conditions with a lot of wind and and started moving into state responsibility areas so that's why we teamed up to help each other with that extreme fighter growth we had a lot of fire induced whether it started getting answer on whether its own wind and sometimes its own tornadoes which ripped trees right out of the ground roots and a tall and talk to them I'm talking about huge pine trees standing 150 ft tall all these tornadoes created which were created by the fire rip them out of the ground and just toss them in the ground like sticks we work together and unified command to build a plan to order all the resources and equipment needed and that's how we put out the Creek Fire yeah there's another question here how many fires did you put out I couldn't even count in in almost thirty years it's been a lot I can tell you that thousands let's see cheap I have a question why do you have to risk your life couldn't you save the people and in your own life with the tools you have your absolutely right many times you know there is that personal risk that you take at the end of the day we try to keep in our in our mind in our priorities as we move through our day that we want to go home and see our families we want to go home and see our children are wives in our husbands so we we definitely take into consideration how much risk it is but we also understand how important other people's lives are how important other people's you know they're being all of the most important things you know it's it's it's not our emergency but it's our pleasure to help them with their emergency so if you have a a a a a a calling for service in your heart that's where firefighting becomes your passion and fire fighting is not the only job for that law enforcement medical service professionals all of those people put their life safety even working in a hospital can be dangerous so you're always weighing that safety option and and making sure that you're doing it the safest way possible and the most venom what time do most people I see you still have your hand up yeah I have a question Chief unlike I know you had to risk your life to save other people's lives I'd like couldn't say the person's life and yours with the two of you have I heard that they have issue and the person yeah we do have good protective equipment so we put on full suits of armor but it's fire and heat resistant material we always wear our helmets and our safety goggles and that's those are some of the ways that we help protect ourselves from the effects of these emergencies from fire from heat from Impact right a hard helmet you know sometimes things are falling on you so those are the ways we protect ourselves we also have a breathing apparatus that help us breathe safe clean air while we're in a fire environment so yes your apps only right we use our tools and our protective equipment to protect us while we're saving those lives yeah good question and thinks Justice for a year father for being a law enforcement officer doing that work I'll let you take it out just going to say thank you to all of our students for all of your questions and preparing such good attention Chief Morgan thank you so much for your time and is being so open and honest about your experiences I think this was a great kick-off to our career speaker series I recorded it so we may we may be able to just revisit that again for that are interested students if you King for organizing the art our speaker today so thank you everyone for being here and again if you have ideas and I know we got a few in there Brittany other speakers let us know alright have a great day everybody thank you Morgan thank you you're welcome yeah thanks for your service cheap you're welcome and thank you so much thanks guys are welcome to log off hey you John thank you so much that was great and I did like your little presentation Farm whatever that really good now what are the purple it was really cool thank you so much for that story storyboard storyline what is it a story map company that's a they're called a r t i s or L is r e e s r i is the parent company of its really centered around mapping and things like that but they offered this story map feature where you can go through and kind of make a nice little presentation but you can embed videos you can embed websites and things like that real easily and it's all it's a cloud-based so you don't have to have this like a PowerPoint saved to your computer and then you get to your presentation and the videos on because it was just happened so that's a it's one of the platforms that I used quite often it's not the only platform we do have a lot of power points as well yeah but you can do some pretty cool things that like why don't we just let's see if I can get to after 11 I liked it it was just like you were just like scrolling it wasn't like click to the next page click to the next page like it was very busy especially like this I'm you're seeing the screen no not yet it's really just a it's kind of a slideshow if you go to edit the story you can sort of build this stuff in it's getting kind of just My Bae stuff if I wanted to add add something just keeps going and going and I could make another of these so if I duplicated like that or add background you like I could have put a stone behind this or something like soothing elevator music or whatever it's fine okay how I know how long you got some you got checking and then she's already waiting for that so I will talk to you soon but John thank you so much I thought I learned a lot about you I was texting Maury I was like I don't think you forgot that's funny I don't know if I told her about this I told her it's still recording by the way
