so can everybody see my presentation now yeah so I can see King mentioned I am a neonatal nurse I am a registered nurse he's are all my initials I have after my knee currently bsn-rn and then I do have a masters in nursing and I'm going to go over with all of those meet you soon I'm so as a high-schooler actually when I was 16 you do a lot of career development as you guys are right now and we talked about what we want to be in originally I wanted to be a midwife and what that means is you are certified and able to deliver babies sometimes midwives deliver in a hospital sometimes after they deliver Birthing Center or at home and ice I love you baby I'll be back I love baby if they still have babies and talk time babysitting today so I can do that but I always love babies so I wanted to do something that involved baby is I was very fascinated by the whole birthing process I thought it was great and I thought that was going to be a really good and while I was researching that as some of you probably are researching your potential careers I realize there's a lot of responsibility and a lot of liability and I sort of thought you know that's a little bit too much but still not. a little bit and then when I was a junior I got really bad bronchitis and I was stuck in bed for the very first week of junior year and somebody brought me is actually trying to look through the pictures of actual pictures of magazine but I got magazine a Life magazine and on the cover of it was a picture of a baby in what's called a nice meal at which is what we used to recreate what should have been happening inside them out in the hospital and so I decided at that moment that I wanted to be an issue nurse and it was pretty a fairly easy Journey for me but I was send a message to have parents you paid for school and I have the grades to get into Fresno State very quickly and it was it was a fairly smooth process that doesn't mean that it will be for everybody but I was very fortunate bring up I grew up actually on the Central Coast in Monterey and Carmel one brother to parents pretty normal upbringing my mom was a teacher my dad was a real estate agent nobody in my family was in the medical field so a lot of times you'll see people choose careers based on what their parents do that's what you're exposed to that's what you feel comfortable with but don't be afraid to really go for your dreams and do whatever you want to do this is you and I knew at that moment I wanted to be a nurse so finish up high school applied to Fresno State and San Jose State because I didn't want to go too far and ended up come Fresno and have been here ever since I went straight from high school into Fresno State and that was 24 years ago 23 years ago. The education waves have changed a lot for you guys know what I'm going to talk about is my past but realistically it might look different for you my daughter graduated from East last year and she's a city right now she also wants to be a nurse he chose to go today because it is free and it's available to you transition for her to just continue doing that so by no means do you have to do is ever the same path I did I moved here to Fresno and while I was at Fresno State I met my husband and we had four children and life but it kept me here but a lot of a lot of people in Fresno stay in Fresno with a great place to raise a family at the great place to work and as a nurse you have a million different opportunities and and places you can and here being that we are in a population is about 500,000 it's not super huge you do have hospitals available to you an option so it really is a good place to start a career even if you went away somewhere to school coming back home it's it's a great place to start working certainly bigger more Metropolitan bigger cities are going to be more competitive than pay but one thing you I have to think about as an adult is cost of living so it's not all about how much money am I going to make cuz that's what we think about what we pick a career right like we want to make all we want to make the money but it's not always about how much money we're going to make just make great money do nurses in San Francisco and Los Angeles make more money than nurses in Fresno yes but you won't necessarily be able to afford the same quality of life you have here so why don't you go back to Carmel why don't you go back to the Cove swell up because you know a little tiny house is a million dollars there and here we have a lot more action it will you put your question in the chat and then we'll go right at the end okay I just want to make sure I get through all of this and then we have plenty of time for questions at the end so my education I graduated in 2000 and like I said from Carmel High School and then in 2005 I graduated from Fresno State with my bachelor's in nursing you if you go to a four-year college. Degree does Take 5 years to accomplish that actually takes four and a half cuz they Consolidated it thanks they Consolidated and you can graduate you do graduate faster so it's board a half years now but it's not a four-year server he's like oh it took me five years to go through college. That's how long it took in . of time I had some kids I had my first daughter that year misses King's Daughters the same age I worked on my family and worked on getting better at my career and I had an opportunity to do a different role and at that same time I decided to get my masters in nursing and my ma is that nursing is in education so basically a teacher you have to have a bachelor's in nursing before you can get a masters and there are bridge programs at you accomplish those things but I stopped why is that and then I woke up one day and decided I only want to do this anymore and I want to be a nurse practitioner and if all of you at some point because you got this far in life have been to your pediatrician's office and sometimes a nurse practitioner in their office who also sees patients can see my prescriptions and treat patients much like a doctor done with a lot less cool and because I've been a nurse for so long I then just get the address on so I kind of did. The long way Masters in nursing education is that the same level as an MP it's just harder to get your MP so I sort of did double the work but I like to do things the hard way but that I should graduate hopefully fingers crossed in August and then by this time next year you working as a nurse practitioner a lot of people couldn't do that at the beginning so they work for a couple years that they know that they watch you pee and then pee go go to school lot sooner never wanted to do that until a couple years ago and so I'm doing it kind of late Midway through my career but at the same time I feel like I have a lot of experience and knowledge to bring with me into that role oh just to backtrack a little bit about types of degrees I guess I should have put Associates first I have a bachelor's in nursing that means I got it Reata for your school I got it from Fresno State you can also go to a city college Fresno city has a great nursing program and get an associate's degree of Nursing like I was saying before if you want to go further and you want to get a master's you have to get that bachelor's first just and there are plenty of programs that do that but here in Fresno is staying home is what you want to do Phoenix which is where I got my last first Masters they do what's called a bridge program where you have your associate you do all the work to get a bachelor's degree and then you go straight into the master's program so I really really really want to impress on you guys that your path and your choices and where you go to school next year that you're at whatever doesn't determine where you're going to end wherever you start start it's whatever you need to do we all come from different backgrounds and places in life and you can be whoever you want to be at any time so when I went to nursing school I didn't even realize there was such a thing as an associate in my mind I thought how to get a bachelor's that was just the only option I probably would have done it any differently like I said I was fortunate to have the resources but it is very possible and very realistic to get an associates degree and work as a nurse while continuing your education I didn't include in this is after you get your bachelor's degree or your associates degree you do have to take a test it's called the NCLEX and that test says you can be a registered nurse that is your registration there are different types of nurses there's a CNA but people talk about that's a certified nurse's assistant there's an MA which is a medical assistant and then there is also an alvian which is a licensed vocational nurse some parts of the country call it a licensed practical nurse and then an RN do all of those people can be considered nurses but I heard talk about being a registered nurse that's what I am and that is if you want to get it. Ultimate I want to be in terms of money and responsibilities and sort of if you feel like you want to move up in the world you have to get I have a mask we also have a master's degree in nursing you can do different types of master's degree depending on what you want to do I did the teaching one I did the educational one there's also one to you be more than ministrator so in the school world to relate that to school that would be somebody who would go on to be your vice principal your principal they want to be more of a management sort of position and then the Third Kind of Masters in nursing is what I most getting right now which is a nurse practitioner again as a nurse practitioner you have to take a test to be able to do that job so don't think test ever go away as they don't once you have a master's degree or any truly any of these degrees there's always lots of certifications and classes that you can add to your resume and add to your skill-set but you can just work as a registered nurse on the other side of all of that is a doctorate of Nursing and those of the people they have dnp after their name they don't have they're not practicing doctors until like we were talking before about doctors who was treat patient they just have a doctor at which is like the ultimate degree and the upside of that degree is that you can then other nurses in school so even though I have a master's degree in nursing education I could not teach at Fresno State and teach new nurses at Fresno State without a doctor so I reached level of nursing if you will it comes with more responsibilities more more abilities to do things obviously money but Doctorate of nursing when you get that degree at a lot more research just like when you guys have to write a paper and you have to give reliable sources right or it's my daughter who's that Karzai she got to check back to her because she didn't have a reliable source saying something right you can't just about facts about things without backing them up but not to never goes away and nursing we used was called evidence based practice which means we're doing things based on what somebody else decided is the best way to do it the same thing happens in teaching right teachers don't just get to do whatever they want willy-nilly they've got to do a little bit more structure curriculum things that have been put into practice and vetted you will sow a doctorate of nursing has as much more I could demick side of it there are positions and roles that people have in the hospital but it's less taken care of ball and more sort of the research paper book for those people the ones that write the nursing books they do those kinds of things so switching over a little bit to the progression Evan nurse once you graduate from nursing school and you've taken your NCLEX becoming a new granddaughter there's lots of training lots of classes lots of orientation lots of things you have to learn to do for example as a NICU nurse we have maybe a couple weeks maybe 2 or 3 days in an IQ is that but out of the four and a half years of nursing school only this much is actually touching and and learning about babies so there's a whole lot of learning to do getting a job as a nurse can be tricky if you want to do something such as a specialty but it just kind of depends on everything is always changing so it depends on where you are or what you want to do and what those opportunities are the time but your everybody starts in the same place and it's very hard you cry a lot and then you moved to an advanced beginner so now you're a little bit more comfortable you're figuring out where you are and what you're capable of getting a little more confidence in the middle you become competent you know what you're doing you can also ask answer questions very easily you might be taking on students as a competent nurse you might be able to be teaching a little bit when we move towards proficient which means you're really pretty good at your job you may have done other education you may be another role if you might have learned more yo to enhance your abilities in your role and then the very lost one over here on that side is expert and an expert nurse means that you are the go-to you are the person who's going and no the most in whatever Department your in I mean you know if you will that's the mom and dad right those are the people that know all the things and kind of call the shots those people generally are the ones who are going to move up to being different roles in the department and not just occupied by taking care of patients so I talked about being a nurse all day but I really must have my career have been an issue nurse and I am currently there working right now at Valley Children's there's two level 3 North items Louisville for but there's there's two big level 3 NICU is here in town Valley Children's and downtown a community Magness house there's a little small level 3 they but they are an extension of Ali children and then at Clovis Community they have a level 2 nurse training so there's a lot lower level to make you there's lots of different types of Nikes here in the valley beyond. Beyond Valley Children's if there is a baby can't get the care that they need at Valley Children's they go to Stanford are used yes. So several hours away so we're very fortunate that we have the capacity and the ability to take care of the babies in the valley because imagine you have a baby you don't soon imagine have a baby and they have to go through three hours away to get the care that they need when they're really really sick so we're very fortunate that we have document bility here stands for neonatal intensive care and for the most part even though there are other departments that use the end if you say Nick you must have will know that you're in the baby world so one in ten babies are born premature why this is so important I can't remember I didn't watch as you guys work again but if there are we have 114 participants so out of the 114 people that were here 10 of those basically 10 11 of those people might have been born early and we'll go over what that means in a second but if you think about a hundred people in a row 10 of them I need the kind of care that I get so there's a lot of babies born every day sometimes downtown at Community they have 25 babies born in a 24-hour. So if you imagine you can match that in your head in a mug how many babies are born in the valley every day if one out of 10 are born premature and then even a little bit more or sick there's always a need for NICU nurse says there's always a need for a star extra I've never had a problem having a job with always been very easy and I work tonight and the last time I was at work over the weekend we had about 60 for babies in the NICU at that time and that was just a valley just baby's going to make you so if every nurse takes care of two or three patients you can kind of imagine how many nurses that takes to take care of it and make your department these are a little bit of the types of patients we see is a NICU nurse healthy babies usually don't come to the next year but every now and then they have some something that they need one thing I did add on here was babies who are exposed to drugs I know a lot of you probably have talked about drugs here in the valley and there's a big problem with Matt now fentanyl is an issue heroin in all of those things are an issue and unfortunately sometimes moms do that when they're pregnant and if you do drugs while your pregnant your baby comes out pretty sick they also think they need drugs trade drugs are in addiction healthy babies born full-term have no issues usually stay with Mom and full-term babies are greater than 39 weeks babies who are born kind of between 35 and 3 remind me that depends on what they need so usually a baby goes to the neck you because they need oxygen or they need IV fluids because they're not able to take a bottle so for one of those reasons X babies between 35 and 39 weeks full term baby stays with Mom preterm less than 35 weeks past becomes the neck you how long they're in the neck you depends on how sick they are how little they are what they're doing so baby is less than 30 weeks is full-term pregnancy 40 weeks we can save babies who are as little as 22 to 23 weeks so that means some of these babies are about account and a pound is a package of butter and so you all know how big that is one regular package of butter you buy at the store that's 1 lb so we have babies that are that is a newborn diaper do full-term baby with a newborn diaper this is this is what they do right this is my Stanley this is a diaper this is what month turn normal healthy baby is a diaper for a 1-ton baby and to be perfectly honest sometimes those babies don't even fit in his diapers there too big for them find another size of a box of butter they are a long right there a little bottoms don't fit in his diaper so very very very tiny we even actually have diapers smaller than a mess. we just don't carry that brand right now so you can imagine when you're born that little and that underdeveloped if you were supposed to be in there for 40 weeks and he only made it to 23 there's a lot of growing that have to happen a lot of a lot of nursing care that has to happen in order to get from there to be able to go home also in the Nick you are babies with problem respiratory issues delayed transition so you go from being inside you in fluid in a different environment to coming out and breathing air and sometimes that is very hard a lot of times babies also come because they're not able to take a bottle so we know how to go to the kitchen and get food and feed ourselves but babies need to take a bottle so sometimes they have to go for that what's the babies with infections I listed some of them there but if a baby is sick just like if you had an ear infection or respiratory infection sometimes they need antibiotics multiple much more likely to be born early much more likely to be in the nick you typically maybe 3/4 of 2 in will be in the NICU and a dad and a quarter of them will go home right away with Mom not all of them well but typically anything more than that so it took with quadruplets went up with anything where there more than one baby born time the public music of the NICU and have all the other problems but do that and then babies born with birth defects so sometimes babies are born with hearts that don't work right intestines that don't work right phones that don't work right lots of different things that can be wrong with them and they also need our care mine career path itself looked a little bit like this an obvious that the new nurse that was a bedside RN I also about 11 years ago I have been a nurse for 1811 years ago I try train to be What's called the charge nurse so I was in charge of the unit making sure things were going the way they were supposed to go that person is kind of responsible for the flow of the day making sure the babies are all too Cara handling other things and then as a clinical supervisor I was kind of like a guidance counselor make sure people are doing their jobs appropriately also worked on find the unit but that's the person when you are an adult and you're in a job there's always going to be somebody who's making sure you do your job right and that person is going to be evaluating usually every year and you know it's very important especially in a in a job that is so critical that you're doing all the things right right just like when you turn in an assignment you have to follow the rules you have to follow the instructions you have to do what is asked of you so as supervisor are usually as the one that's and then when I got that Masters in nursing education I then became a clinical nurse educator which just like your teachers are helping you learn my primary role as an educator was when new nurses come to me brush out of school my job was to make sure that they knew how to do all the things they knew how to change diapers they knew how to give medicine they knew how to take care of these page did they were safe and able to get better and go home as a nurse there's a lot of oversight there's a lot of people watching and there's a lot of things that you have to do to make sure that you're taking care of patient properly and this is across the word sort of how it goes there's always going to be those roles and not in any Department your Ed a little bit about my day in the life so I was all over her I wanted to be a nurse practitioner and now I'm back to sort of doing bedside care just being a regular a regular nurse at the bedside tonight I go to work and at the beginning of my shift I will get report I will make sure that my environment is and safe every nurse is responsible for checking their equipment and making sure that things are working correctly and we'd all have experienced what it means to be in an environment that is contaminated with viruses and bacteria and things so we wipe everything down so that's part of the beginning of the show the meat of my day if you can care of the patient three to four times during a 12-hour shift I'm changing diaper I'm taking temperatures I'm doing blood pressure changing her diaper and feeding them I right now where I am in my life I'm only taking care of sort of the babies are getting closer to going home so the nikhil is very unique in that it takes care of patients who are super super super sick and writing this site diaper and very little and meeting a lot of care babies that are close to going home so if anybody in your life has had a bunch of the hospital had a baby come home the next day. Size baby we also take care of those babies so they're just getting better enough to call home very unique in that like for adults and for you guys if you want to the hospital during that critical time where you were really really sick you being a nice to you and then you would go to What's called the floor and you're getting a different level of care the Nick you all the babies are in the same unit they're just in different areas and we do different things for them but the meat of my day is usually every 3 hours doing all of those things sometimes other procedures and things we have to do sometimes and sometimes they need different things so I'm doing that taking care of yourself is really important to taking care of themselves so we also go brakes to 30 minute breaks where you are clocked out you are supposed to be eating or sometimes I sleep because I work overnight and you are taking care of yourself it's a really and I added it in this because it's really an important part we're not just working for 12 hours without any sort of rest we definitely need to take breaks but I take my first break around 10 and my second one around 4 a.m. and it breaks up that day and then the most important part is the end of your shift handing your patient off to somebody else so just like when you finish the end of a school year and your teacher is going to say okay these are the things that this person is capable of they're going the next class I have to do that for the next nurse the next Thursday Snow Queen and be able to take care of that patient some other key components of being a nurse especially in the nick you or supporting families during a difficult time oh this is very scary and pray hard when people that are in the hospital or being cared for by a nurse are sick right so they're scared I don't feel good there's a lot going on. Bushnell incapable of supporting other people is really important documentation and safe practice so it's my job to know what I need to document just like when you get your grades your teacher have to put them in in the grade book write a document that those things are done they have to go into areas you have to know where those things are at so I have to make sure that I'm putting all of the things that I did and all the things that the baby that I have to put them all in the church that it's written down if you didn't document it you didn't do it that's a huge part of being a nurse much like showing your work right you do math problem you got to show you work you better document that you did it and in addition to that safe practice so it's my job to know if I'm doing things right nobody's watching me every moment of the night it's my job to know I'm doing things right and if I don't know how to do something it's important that I I need to ask or look it up or figure it out but a nurse who doesn't recognize that is. And then education and career development as I discussed earlier I chose to continue my education continue my career change my career a little bit learn new things you can become a nurse and stay a bedside nurse and just be a nurse for 50 years some people do. They are content to just be a nurse I wasn't there I wanted to do more things and so I just keep going to school and I'm done now cuz I don't do this anymore but you can do as much as you want to do or you can just and I don't say just being honest because nurses are very important but it's absolutely up to you how much how far how into nursing you can be and that's what makes nursing really really great is that the Chinese are unless you can change what kind of nurse you are how much school do you go to you never ever have to stop ever so it's a very very diverse very Progressive career so if you want to be a nurse I convince you that this is the best job ever my advice to you would be to focus on her science classes take every science class you can in high school I know you're all like but it's really going to be important cuz you're going to take them again in college so if you understood chemistry in high school if you get those Concepts and taking it in college is going to be that much easier and that's not to say that you shouldn't focus on all of your classes but the science classes you have to take all the science classes and you basically have to get an A and all the science classes in order to be even considered for the nursing program the focusing on those dying father's making them a priority really understanding what teaching you instead of just getting the work done will help you volunteering either and I just put a couple of examples in a hospital in a nursing home once you're 16 you can be a volunteer at the hospitals and do all kinds of things volunteering both once shows that you are choosing to spend your time giving you're choosing to be part of the community or choosing to do these things but it also exposes you to an environment that you may not be used to write most of us we haven't spent that much time in the hospital if you volunteer there then you're exposed to those people you understand how things work it gives you something to put on your resume if give you an experience that other people win get a job even though working and going to school as hard to get a job as somebody who interviewed new nurses the best interviews for people who worked at Starbucks Mustang have to work at Starbucks but there is a level of customer service and work life experience and things that you have to go through when you held down a job get a job in an office or hospital if you can get your foot in the door customer service in the food industry is those people end up being very successful as a nurse because you know how to deal with the person who's not happy with their coffee you know how to deal with the person who is complaining and upset and you have good skills in the last thing which is communication you will always every minute of the day how to talk to somebody there are jobs where you can do your job and never have to speak to another person again do you work turn it in get it done you can many jobs are work from home now there are a lot of jobs out there that don't require interaction at all that nursing is not one of them you have to talk to your charge nurse have to talk to the doctors have to talk to the parents if you take care of a do patients got to talk to the patient you're all I talk to my babies to you were always going to be interacting with somebody so practicing. Communication skills approaching the adults in your life with respect and but also being assertive communication is also about eye contact it's about body language learn those you'll take a communication class in college but if you can learn those skills in your teenage life it will be easier to do that in school or leave it or not I hated medication I would get up in front of the car like a teacher does and try to give a speech and I would turn red and it was shaved and my voice would shake and I absolutely just buy it and then here I was teacher basically for a bunch of new nurses but that's the biggest advice I give people because even if you are the best nurse and you take the best care. Patient if you can't communicate that parents that they don't have confidence and you the way you present yourself the way you carry yourself the way you speak to them they're not going to trust you and same thing with the doctor if I can't talk to a doctor and have a conversation with them they don't think I know that it's a very very important part of it and using correct grammar and are paying attention in English class and understanding words and understanding Ted's there's a big dipper and something happened and something is happening and that's really important in nursing to that happen at the end of the shift last night or you experiencing that right now and it seems like little simple things but it matters a whole heck of a lot so working on navigation Eminem that's a long as I thought it was going to see if you guys want to ask me questions if we don't get you questions today please feel free to email me I'll probably answer you clock in the morning but I am being a nurse I'm passionate about being a nurse I love being a nurse and anything I can do to help you my hope is that at least one of you I've inspired you and go tell my story somewhere down the line but wow you guys right there. If you want if you guys have questions and would like to ask them allowed you're welcome to raise your hand in Zoom Sarah if you want to if you are able to see that hand raised you're welcome to call and then I'll moderate the chat I think most of that doesn't mean I don't think you'll be able to see it the chat and the only thing that's in there it looks like it is as king said if you guys want she can send you some pictures of her twins so sidebar when my daughter met King older daughter she was really excited I came home Mommy I met this friend I really like her she's so wonderful and her father's heart into ends so course I get super excited right because I hear you guys are in sixth grade and there's twins like I was super excited I sent a couple pictures of the twins in the NICU to your email if you want to pull them up you can kind of show them what it looks like and I do like a transport picture when they move them from children and a Grayson's on a ventilator one point so you can point out a few a few thing I'm not in any of the pictures I mean sure they were just at the base so this one we go back to my twins were born at 32 weeks and basically my body just kind of decided that it was time for them to be born so they were 3 lb and 14 lb respectively and they were healthy but small so they needed help with breathing eating maintaining their body temperature daughter was a little bit smaller and smaller which is very normal a lot of times there's 11 there's Twins or multiples one baby is bigger than the other there's any dog food but it's very normal for one baby need more what we're looking at right now is a picture of the transport isolette so we started at St Agnes went to okay is my transport team this is the transport team I work for with right now so what you're looking at is called a transport ISO let the babies go in that little plastic box it's warm in there a little bit noisy but we're able to put monitors on those lights at the bottom or monitors were able to do all the things that the baby needs in the air or so just like everybody has probably being a regular Gurney that transports peaches they are able to do all those things while they're moving from one to one facility to another I'm going to start with if I mess up your name but Serena did you have a question I think her screen might be frozen she has connectivity issues sometimes okay Kaylee Kalia sorry does this dolphin like being a trauma surgeon to her though does this have to like do this do I have to do all of this because it to become a trauma surgeon too or is it just for nursing but you will go you'll get a degree in biology and then you'll go to medical school and your schooling will be a lot longer but the idea is the same right you'll start as a new doctor. To learn a few things and then after learn how to do surgery and a regular surgery but I love that what you want to do that's a huge bowl and that's awesome Rihanna do you want to try out sorry been waiting very patiently I'm going to have two things one does does nursing depend on if you believe in nursing or not so in what way are would somebody believe in nursing nerds like is it okay if you if you like nurse just because you want to and not because you want to earn the money so you have to want to be a nursing you have to be what you're doing and I think that that's true for any job we have to believe in what you what you want to do yeah you have to believe in what you want to do you have to have passion no matter what you want to do in life right you have to passion your counselors and your teachers there in those rolls because they want to help you 60 they believe in what they're doing they want to help you learn they want you to be great human on earth we have to believe and taking care of our patient one of the one of the reasons I'm choosing to do a little bit something different with my career is because I believe that I have the capability to help patients get better on another level so yeah you got to believe in it just one last thing can I leave meeting at the premises Kenny I think you have to wait until the meeting is over Samuel thank you for asking wait to me it's not over Okay Serena can send me her question in the chat shortly go ahead and move on to catch and jeeps like after you delivered during the babies wide I need a transport machine for them has babies stayed at the hospital and actually they did go in and isolette in a transport I was out on a gurney so we don't for reasons of safety we don't want to carry a baby from room to room in the hospital right where they're born is not where they're going to get better so sometimes we need to move them inside the hospital but in mrs. King case her babies went from Saint Agnes Medical Center Saint Agnes Hospital to Valley Children's Hospital and so they had to be transported there in the transport isolette and either I you know if they went by helicopter or ambulance but they have to save to move even downtown at the Nick you there where the babies are born in labor and delivery is on a different floor so they got to get get out of the room go into an elevator go up a floor go back into another department so there's always a lot of movement is this is Grayson on the van he's on he's actually so yes this is a very very typical premature patient this is exactly what I would have expected him to look like at 32 weeks from top to bottom he has what's called Bubble CPAP if any of your parents or grandparents have CPAP at home very similar idea it's pushing air and through him nose down into his lungs cuz he's not able to do it himself the biggest challenge for babies who are born early as if their lungs are not ready to do the things that longer supposed to do so we have to help them she has that  his chin because we want his mouth to stay close so we can make a closed system when you blow into a balloon if you let the neck of that balloon go all they are is going to come out we're trying to keep the long open we got to keep the top of the balloon very tight so they're just trying to keep his always are and all the air that they're pushing into that clear tube on his nose is got to stay in there there is a for it to come out just like we breathe out but it's on the top of it he has kind of hard to see but he has a little orange feeding tube in his mouth that's because he didn't know how to eat when he was born and probably at this point wasn't eating very much but we helped them eat through a feeding tube he has what are called beads and that those like patches the circular and then the square around it those attached to a monitor that show his heart rate his respiration what's going on inside and then where his belly button is now he has what are called umbilical lines so those are some bigger ones that were able to give him fluids and what a babies born they're attached to their mom doing a bilkul cord and when you cut that cord you have easy access to the baby's body from circulation stand so he has lines there he also in his left hand has what's called a peripheral IV just another kind of an IV and then a diaper of course and on his ankle call the Posey and it pop he was just his ID band every patient was admitted to the hospital matter where they are they have some sort of identification because it's really really important we're taking care of the right patient and doing the right thing let's see what else she's done why is my speak loudly since it's a pink blanket do you have that or having to have it hooked up to a syringe she put milk in their their breast milk or formula she's a little bit I can tell I can tell by her size but also she's a little bit better here so this was not right away but she's on what's called high-flow nasal cannula so oxygen that is going in her nose but we're not so dependent on the pressure so this is very much what an adult a pediatric patient would be on if they needed oxygen this is sort of The Next Step she also looks like she's put on a little bit of weight she's filled out a little bit icy cheeks so I can tell just by looking at this that she's a little bit older here but she does have this is a better View and her right hand this is a better view of a peripheral IV as well and it looks like based on her umbilical cord that she didn't have on the local Lines by Greyson. all the things like you know just by looking at that picture you think there's one of Grace and maybe under lights Dave is on the high-flow he's doing a little bit better he's more comfortable he doesn't have the lines so the so actually does still have mine but he's doing a little bit better and not talk to Jeff and that little like stuffed animal we have there we would give to parents to let them hold it so Mom would like put it in her in her bra and her blouse and then put it next to the baby sense that baby is not able to be with him oh, we use those to comfort them blue light and she was saying is we called lights but it's called phototherapy so what happens when a baby is born premature what two things happen mom and baby when Mom is pregnant she shared blood with a baby lots and lots of blood clots of blood that goes to Baby so what happens if the baby has extra blood when they're born baby gets a little bit of jaundice but not every baby will need these lights to help it go down a premature baby has all the extra blood By Their little bodies are not as good at getting rid so we put them under the blue light switch break it down to make it go away it's basically a normal part of being a preemie almost every baby goes through it and it only lasts for a few days usually but jaundice gets better because the baby's pee and poop out what's called bilirubin so they have too much of something they need to get rid of it does light help them get rid of the other one is dressed so that's just kind of a close-up of him the light is very strong you know just like when you would go outside when it's a very very bright. you want to put sunglasses on protect your eyes that we protect his little eyes but he has a nasal cannula and his nose he has a feeding tube in his mouth and then honest trust you can see one of the Aleve I just thought it might be interesting to see kind of what what Nikki babies look like you sharing that I didn't think about it and or have the time to kind of pull some stock pictures but it's much more it's much more fun to see your baby I don't have I don't have any questions left in
